Me: Ma, did you go vote?
Mom: Mamta, the lines were so long… there was no parking this morning so I left.
Me: Mom, you’re an immigrant… you’ve been through tougher times than this. You came to America with $25 and now you’re giving up your right to vote because you can’t wait in line??
Mom: That was so long ago… we came to America for an easier way of life.

i hate it when people call it “giving up your right to vote” because logically it's NOT.

just because someone doesn't choose to vote doesn't mean they're giving up the right to vote. the two are not synonymous. it just means they didn't want to vote for that particular election for whatever reason that they have

if someone didn't vote because they were in the hospital on election day, does that mean they “gave up their right to vote”? No.

I think you're arguing semantics. There's a difference between being unable to vote on election day due to illness and having the opportunity to vote, but deciding not to do so. I think people use the phrase of “giving up your right…” to emphasize the fact that in many countries, including China, the people do not have the right to vote, and it is a privilege of a democratic society that should not be tossed away so flippantly because it's inconvenient to do so. I guess one could say that you're “choosing not to vote”, but that hardly has the same impact.

Anyhoo, for to please back to the engrish.
