True love.

A conversation with my Mom after my second pregnancy.

Mom: Waaaaa! You got so fat! You look like a fat person swallow your face!

Me: That’s really nice, Mom. I love you too.

Mom: I love you that is why I tell you. Only mother who love their child
very much would tell them they are ugly. If I hate you, I would tell you you
are beautiful and you should eat more food. Eat more chocolate. Person who
tells you eat more, they the one that hate you! Not me I love you so much so
I put you on diet, help you keep your husband.

Me: There is nothing wrong with our relationship…

Mom: For now! But stay too fat too long and he gonna look for pretty skinny
girl and what happen to you? Fat, ugly with babies and no man. Poor you!

Me: Don’t worry!

Mom: Don’t worry? How can I not worry? I only one worry for you! (long
silence) Did he take life insurance out on  you?

Me: MOM!!!!!

Mom: I just worry that’s all!

Reebok ZigTech Shoes, like any new sneaker design/tech, are accompanied by a glowing press release that's chock full of questionable locker-room science and athlete endorsements. I know that. I understand Zig Pulse Shoes. I know that these are just Mens ZigTech Shoes, that they're not going to improve my endurance (which, in my case, could consist of "the absense of embarrassment"). I know that my year-old pair of zig pulse women are in perfectly fine condition, thanks to my structured regiment of not exercising, ever, no matter what, and therefore I do not need a new pair of Reebok Easytone Trainers. I know that these sneakers cost $100 and will sit, next to the similarly-unused New Reebok Easytone Shoes, in my closet, and that I should very simply not buy them.Easytone Shoes new ZigTech sneakers are billed as an "energy drink for your feet," which is completely ridiculous, but sort of makes sense since both are an unnatural shade of chartreuse. Lookinng for a great all-around athletic shoe that gives you an extra boost to your workout? Check out Reebok Easy Tone Shoes for an amazing concept that puts more spring in your walk-- almost literally. If you are familiar with Bosu, it's a similar techology that forces you to engage balance and core muscles and it works while you walk. The the Cheap Zigtech Shoes is not a shoe for the gym- it's a general walkinng shoe. This shoe features balance pods built into the basic design of the shoe to create what Reebok EasyTone calls a "natural instability" which means your body has to adjust with every step (and every muscle group) to move forward. Much like walking on uneven ground or sand, it works those legs to get them sleek and sexy. Reebok EasyTone Inspire is the first major shoe manufacturer to get into the working Discount Reebok EasyTone-- meaning that it works your legs while you walk: toning and triming glutes, hamstrings, calves and more while you walk. These Reebok ZigTech are ventilated and have a sleek aerodynamic look and come in a small collection of colors.

baahahaha! that is my mom!! oh man i'm so glad I'm not the only one....

she told me today all my haircuts are ugly
  • My Dad ALWAYS tells me im fat lol.
  • bunneh
I once had the audacity to "balloon" all the way up to a size 8 in law school and when I came home for Christmas, my entire family commented repeatedly on how fat I had gotten. I mean, I'm 5'6" and was 134 lbs at the time--hardly overweight by white people standards! But thank God I'm back down to my normal size 4 and 120lbs, or I would never have heard the end of it.
  • gooch
    that's still massive
  • Desigirl
To add, I think i actually don't mind our moms saying this type of stuff. Americans are generally really 'politically correct' and will always tell a girl she looks great no matter what, but they are way more diet obsessed tahn Asian people.
Asian ppl just say it to your face, and sometimes it's helpful...like an aunt told me once that my forehead was weirdly darker than my face...and shouldn't it be lighter cuz of my bangs? i checked it out and it turned out i have a lot of fuzzy hair on my forehead lol...see no american person woulda told me that
  • Choob
I don't think you can really say that all Americans are like that.. It really depends on who you're speaking to. There are plenty of brutally honest people in America. It's just polite to keep certain things that may be offensive to yourself and some people.. well don't really care what they say.
  • VZG
But most of us can tell on our own if we're comfortable with our bodies.
  • Desigirl
HAHAHAHH i laughed so much. Im pakistani and my mom says the same type of stuff. Like she'll tell me to wear higher heels, so I can get a taller guy, because taller guys have more value..lol
  • anniepho
I think its just a natural asian mom thing, I am lean but I eat a lot.. and my nickname around the house is "fay muoi" in chinese which translates to fat lady.. but that is also the nickname of our beastly akita dog. LOL
  • Potato
    OMG! xD ...does that mean my mum hates me? ;___;
  • Thanks everyone! Didn't realize I had more comments! And yes, my mom really said all this. And this is not the worst she's said! Oh man, but you gotta love her!
  • mar
it's not just my mom that'd say this...ALL Asian moms...oh wow, i haven't seen you since you were 13! wow...you got fat.
  • jess
I completely empathize! my mom always tells me to quit sports because (exact words here), "if you get too fat, i won't be able to marry you off!"
  • zengjian
Mom: Don’t worry? How can I not worry? I only one worry for you! (long
silence) Did he take life insurance out on you?

That is so harsh, but just SO funny at the same time. I can't believe your mom said that.
  • I. love. this. =]
MY MOM SAYS THE SAME WHEN SHE TELLS ME I'M FAT. "I care about you that's why I have to tell you to lose some weight." I've never been pregnant either. Fail. Epic. -_-
I love your blog(s). It's such an amazing idea. I can relate so well. :D
  • danielj.
hmmm... yeah my mom pretty much tells me the same thing...
except shes not a fob... and im not asian... im black..
  • Elle
Ughhh.... My Mom is EXACTLY like that! She can get annoying with that since she does it a lot.
  • Anastasia Beaverhausen
I have a daughter and I can tell you, what she says is true. If your mom won't tell you, no one will tell you!
  • Mama Bear
OMG - this sounds exactly like my mom who is WASP. She says "I can tell you this because I love you. Who the heck talked you into that haircut? And why did you buy those glasses? That salesperson saw you coming and said now I can get rid of these frames no one wanted!"
  • ano
truly an american problem... european are not so chubby yet.
    but this is hilarious...
  • Mary
Ha ha, that's how Europeans see themselves, but it's not true anymore: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6148456.stm

This mom is so cute! All the fob moms are adorable, I can't stand it.
  • Withoutaname
This is something that I find actually to be a problem, rather than endearing. My mom does this to me too---even though I battled an eating disorder in high school when I mention other people who are anorexic she'll say "you should learn to be like them." Uh, thanks, been there, done that.
  • a_c
Again, though, it's hard to argue with her logic. Tough love, no mollycoddling, that's the Asian Mom way! =P
  • I'm sorry to hear, but I'm glad it's in your past. I agree with Ello. Parents can say some, for lack of a better and less rude word, ignorant things, but you take it with a grain of salt. I shake my head at some of the things my mom says, but you roll with it.
  • I completely agree that it is a problem - but not one we can change in the older generation. It is important that we teach our children better body image and self respect. In the meantime, all we can do is laugh about it - either that or cry. Seriously.

  • hyperbolannie
So true. It's either laugh or cry. I read this to my mom in Chinese and even she was laughing sheepishly b/c she knows it's something she would say.
  • getting chubbier apparently
my mom was once in my room when i was changing talking to me about something, and when i was just in my underwear she stopped cold and asked me, "have you stopped exercising?"

    :(
  • Loey
    Wow.. That is.. unfortunately hilarious
  • Pretty much the funniest thing I've ever seen on this site! Aww. Tough love = true love, for sure. It's really hard to argue with her logic, you know.
  • eatxchoui
    My mom doesn't comment anymore! Maybe I should worry . . . .
  • It's nice to know that the angst my Mom brings me can make bring such enjoyment to others! ;o)
  • Ayu
My mother is the same way. Except, since I have no boyfriend, she's freakishly concerned with my weight. She loves telling me I'm getting fat ALL the time >_>
  • Gabs
Ditto. She never lets me forget it. -.-
  • TamZ
    ohmygosh. same here!
  • yiu
    Urg same here!
    Not helping my confidence!! D:
