Well that’s some circumstance

My Caucasian dad’s a pastor of an American church. There are no Koreans in the church except my mom. After Bible study, there were prayer requests. My mom raised her hand and gave hers…

“Peas pray po man at work, he goin thru bad circumcisions. He needa our prayers.”

She meant circumstances, NOT circumcision. Imagine my dad’s and my reaction during prayer requests. Let’s just say, it’s quite inappropriate for the Pastor and pastor’s daughter to be laughing during prayer requests.

Can I just say that this blog is to respectfully celebrate our parents' unusual ways? I dont think we should be ridiculing any accents. We got enough of that crap from others for a long time.

I agree. This story came across as more condescending than funny or cute.

I feel like there's nothing wrong with this post. Why would someone condescend their own mom? This was just funny in the context that it was during church and it was completely unexpected and even funnier when you can't hold in your laughter. Dude. I thought this was classic.

Most of these are funny, but this one is kind of.. just making fun of her accent.

Why are so many Asians in America so Christian nowadays? It seems like every Asian is, has or knows a Christian pastor. What was wrong with Buddhism or Confucianism?

Because Buddhism tells people that fundamentally their suffering and struggles don't matter, and Confucianism says that if you're a poor peasant farmer it's good for you to sit down and shut up.

Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism aren't really practiced a la carte in Chinese culture anyway; traditional Chinese religion is very syncretistic. Here in Malaysia a lot of non-Christian or non-Muslim Chinese will put down “Buddha” as their religion on official forms whereas they mostly pray to ancestors or folk or Taoist gods.

And Christianity tells you we are all born sinners…
Many East Asians don't have strict “this only” view on religion. You would be surprised at how many people worship Jesus and their ancestors and some kitchen god at the same time.
In this case because the mother is married to a white pastor, it explains her religion.
