the have you eaten thing is not relegated to fob's. I am third and fifth gen Canadian and my mom used to ask me the same thing when I was in college, and any time she visited or I visited she took me grocery shopping to make sure I had food. And my dad opened my mail “to make sure it wasn't important” all the time.
