the have you eaten thing is not relegated to fob's. I am third and fifth gen Canadian and my mom used to ask me the same thing when I was in college, and any time she visited or I visited she took me grocery shopping to make sure I had food. And my dad opened my mail "to make sure it wasn't important" all the time.

i'm in college right now, and my mom calls me every single day...(which i don't mind, i love her to death). she always asks/says:
a] have you eaten yet? or...don't forget to eat!
b] winter is coming back! make sure you wear enough clothes! cover your neck! don't catch a cold!

LMAO! I feel your pain. My mom was so kind as to open my mail when I got accepted into University and check the "single-sex dorm" option in black pen. *sigh*
And yes, both parents always ask "have you eaten" whenever they call!
