My parents never gave me an English name when we moved to the States as a kid, so they gave me a phonetic spelling of my Korean name, Jeong Do. Not only is the spelling impossible for foreigners to pronounce, it sounded awfully similar to John Doe. I’ve been called John Doe many a times during my lifetime… Eventually when I got naturalized I permanently changed it to two initials: JD

I went to high school in a 75% Asian neighborhood and this looks like our high school yearbook!
In a non-fob story, when I was studying abroad in France my friend’s French host-dad found all of our our American names too difficult to pronounce so he decided to call everyone “Paul” because it was simpler.

A similar thing happened to my cousin. They named her Sindy after Cinderella (clearly didn’t know how to spell that either). She has since moved back to Korea and goes by her Korean name.

my parents named me Felix. They not only can’t spell it, they don’t even come close to pronouncing it… They call me, “pellix” or “pilex”…

My cousin was born on a ship so his first and middle names are “Wilson Line” which I think is a company that’s now out of business.
