Uhm, just a question. How can she get tanned inside the car? I thought people riding on motorcycles are the ones in danger of that. Plus it's not that hot outside, obviously, judging from the photo.
D
I work in an autoglass shop. All glass that goes into a car is solar tinted… that means no UV rays will get inside. She will never get tanned as long as her windows are rolled up. HA
braineyak101
omygoodness, do we have the same mom, because my mom has the EXACT same thing, and she made them with the EXACT same fabric hahaa
squareby
NO WAY!!! my mother has some like those too that she made a few years ago!
G
Priceless! Don't tell the people who make those sleeves. They'll be out of their jobs
alicekim
That's why it's funny..
Anyway, you still get tanned/burnt from driving (especially your left arm — the arm closest to the window). Don't know where you live, but it's pretty common.
d
i dont think so. i have proof that the left side of my body is more tan, specifically my arms, neck, and face
neeno
HAHA i thoguht my mom was the only one to have that! Sometimes she tries and makes me wear it in the car as well, but i just hid my arm under a sweater or something -_-
Jane Lu
Incorrect. Don't know where you live, but on the planet Earth, glass absorbs all UV rays. You can't get tan in the car, let alone through any window.
THAT'S why it's funny. =P
alicekim
Really? That's so weird.. whenever my parents and I take a road trip, depending on who's driving, our left arm always gets burnt. My dad's also [not severely] allergic to the sun, so whenever he's in the sun too long, he gets like a rash… his arm always has a sunburn/rash afterwards. Hmm, who knows.

Oh my goodness. This is what all my aunts do… My mum doesn't, because she's naturally very tanned.
http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/ Tammy
I've gotten my arm sunburned in the car (the window was rolled all the way up) before so the glass does NOT absorb all the UV light unless it has a specific UV coating on it.
http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/ Tammy
Hey, your omma is saving money because there are websites that sell them for $30.
andy
lol my mom AND dad wear these whenever they drive also.. and theyre taiwanese (: lotsa taiwanese parents do that
Jen
Oh man – I have to get these for my mom. She drives around with old towels on her arms. These would be a major improvement.

Incorrect and I have a very brown arm to prove it. AND my windows, which remain up, are tinted.
aoede
Yeah, my mom wears a jacket backwards for that
Miri
I want these! I did not know they exist! I love driving with my windows down in the spring and fall but I get a bad sun burn after only a few minutes. I usually wrap a scarf around.
Depending on the glass, it might not stop all UV rays.
manu
yes glass filter UV no matter what. When you get tan through the glass it's because of infrared…that are not filtered…these ones. Basically it's not that you get tan like UV, your skin burns, but you believe you tan.
C
hahah my mom has one of those visors also -.- and those arm sleeves like the picture.. she only wears it when it's sunny though.. but we live in Texas, so it's pretty much everyday -.- haha
Desigirl
YES u can get a tan through windows!! i can't believe someone is posting above, pretending to work in an autobody shop. lol
Quote: “A window acts like a sunscreen. It does not block all the UV radiation but it does block the most dangerous wavelengths of UV radiation. Glass absorbs short wavelength ultraviolet light, but it does pass 350 to 400 nanometer ultraviolets. While this longer wavelength ultraviolet is less harmful than the shorter wavelength variety, ****you can still tan or burn if you get enough exposure****.”

Wowww, I started doing that with plastic shopping bags when I was 18. I am so cool.
AlexaT
Maybe he does work there, but he only sweeps up after the real workers, so he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Since they work in a car shop they probably didn't do college physics or bio XD
Aidyl
Wow, not only are you and the poster you replied to being mean and condescending, it's really juvenile.
meliC
LOL haha, mi friend mom did that, i asked her if she was cold (she was doing this w/ a long sleeved shirt) and haha, she didnt want to get tanneddddd LOL ROFLMAOOO
rokucha
your mom needs to go to Japan to check out the latest in UV protection gear. almost ALL Japanese women will wear gloves, UV visors/hat, and clothing that have '98% UV cut” clearly written on them (in English, even though all else is written in Japanese) in the summer. not that I blame them but it's a real sight to see a bunch of middle-aged women wearing what could become an unofficial uniform of their time!
Chesty LaRue
I also know it doesn't absorb every bit of it because I sell glasses and the transitions lenses get a little dark behind your car windshield, not fully dark but they do change a bit, which is a reaction to UV light. Plus I am white (WHITE) and have gotten a sunburn with my windows up and AC on.
sirhin
Oh my gosh – I do that! haha… Well, until I lost my pair so now I just smell like 70 SPF sunblock whenever I go out.
http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/ Tammy
I almost always wear longs sleeves, jeans and hats when I go out doors. I also own some UV clothing as well.
ryuuseisoul
classic xD
My mom: I wear these to protect myself from UV rays Me: But…the sun isnt even out… Her: There are still UV rays.
http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/ Tammy
That's true but we need a little UV, it's the only way we can get Vitamin D naturally.
sammy
How can it give you a tan when it doesn't make my transitions glasses change shades
http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/ Tammy
If you read the quote further down, you would have read that not all UV light is filtered by the car glass and that transition lenses actually DO change color inside a car, just not as much as being outside the car.
jo
LOL!, my mum has these too
grammar cat
I didn't know you can get tan through glass – I thought it let in UVB rays, which are cancerous, but not UVA which cause change in melatonin…

OMG I thought my mom was the only one…..
Yujin
oh my freakin god my mom used to do that too
kat
haha my dad cut off sleeves from an old sweater to wear when he drives XD
Guess
HAHAHA… on a sunny day.. my mom puts one of her big purses up to her face so she won't get tan… as if every other exposed body part wouldn't

Wow… Asian people really hate dark and black skin.. ah well, guess things will never change.. For the record.. I love my dark skin and I love others skin. Guess we can't all be that way
Nyan
She's right. On overcast days UV rays still get through, sometimes it is reduced but sometimes the rays can get reflected through the clouds and actually intensify! Tammy is right that a little UV is good, but don't get too much, especially on cloudy days.

friend's car had gloves inside for his mom when she sits in the front seat.
My daughter wears scarves on her arms while driving (Very fair complexion of Swedish/Polish genes, with windows up and air on in AZ)…I'll have to sew some of these sleeves…..probably cost less than four dollars with a nice fabric
luvin this
my mom has some that go all the way up to her shoulders…
andie
DUDE! my mom does the same thing!! lol i thought it was just her
Scully21
OH you so can! I'm not Asian, but I am very Irish and will attest to this!!
Apricotpapercut
For the record, both UVA and UVB are potentially carcinogenic and both can cause tans. UVB is the more famous culprit one in both accounts. Whether UVA is carcinogenic is controversial but it is most certainly tan-inducing (most sun-tanning salons use primarily UVA irradiation). I don't know how much UV light can be filtered by glass, but “filtering” of any kind is more effective against high-energy light. UVB is higher enery than UVA so you'd expect, if anything, that UVA would be the one to penetrate the glass.
Also, melanin is the pigment; melatonin is the sleeping chemical.
Always gotta practice safe UV practices!
More on topic: My mother does the same thing!! Hers are pink.
http://www.getskinnygovegan.blogspot.com Get Skinny, Go Vegan.
OMG. I actually buy the stuff from the sun catalogs and don’t look quite as goofy, but maybe your mom will start a trend!! Maybe some polka dots or colorful stripes??
fobsrus
As far as I know these arm covers are mostly used in parts of China by farmers who spend long hours working in the sun. And they do come in all kinds of patterns. I came across them at a little market in Chengdu and got given two pairs: one in black on white polka dots with lace edges and another edgy looking pair in blue, red and white paint splashes!!
shanghaigirl
lol I finally understand why all those women going around in Shanghai on their scooters with their jackets backwards!
thank you, but the sleeves thing is pretty common in China ( saw it everywhere!)
